Gordon Lowe, a 10th Mountain Division veteran and longtime Stowe resort executive, died on March 28, 2015 at his home in Shelburne, Vermont, at the age of 94.
Lowe was born in May 1920 in Schenectady, New York, and raised in North Adams, Massachusetts, where he was a ski racer and caption of the track team. In 1940, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and served with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II: He was part of the Aleutian campaign in Alaska; taught skiing and winter warfare at Camp Hale in Colorado; and fought in Italy.
After the war, he married his high-school sweetheart, Jean Malcolm. They moved to Stowe, where he started as a ski instructor and then became manager of the T-bar and state shelter on Mount Mansfield. Later, he managed Spruce Peak and supervised the construction of the 18-hole golf course. He was named Vice President and General Manager of the Mount Mansfield Company and held that position until his 1975 retirement.
That year, he and Jean moved to North Hero on Vermont’s Champlain Islands, where they gardened, golfed, and raised Scottish Highland cattle for 33 years. In 2003, he was presented with the Vermont Hall of Fame medal for his service in World War II and his contributions to the state ski industry. He was predeceased by Jean, who died in 2005.
