Grace Van Hulsteyn, co-inventor of the Savaface nose warmer, died December 12, 2015 at a hospice in Manhattan. She was 78 and suffered a stroke after a three-year battle with ALS.
While an undergraduate at Bryn Mawr, Van Hulsteyn and her classmate Betsy Nelson crocheted a woolen nose-sock that secured with a cord around the back of the head. The product took off after the women appeard on the TV show What’s My Line, in March, 1958.
Van Hulsteyn went on to practice law. Living and working from her barn and property in Cocheton, New York, she was a ceramicist and French horn player, and inveterate traveler.
She was preceded in death by her father John, mother Yildiz and brother John. She is survived by longtime friend and companion Rudy, brother David (wife Peggy), niece Lisa (husband Jim), and nephew Dave (wife Debra).
