Tony Hedgecock

Former U.S. Ski team coach William Anson “Tony” Hedgecock Jr., 63, died on March 16, 2014 after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Flint, Michigan, he learned to ski at Caberfae. After graduating from the University of Utah, Hedgecock worked as a ski coach at Park West (now Canyons) and in 1975 joined the U.S. Ski Team as assistant coach of the men’s alpine squad. After the 1980 Olympics, he worked as the Marker tech rep for the U.S. women’s team on the World Cup circuit. In 1999 he joined Head/Tyrolia as western regional sales manager, based in Park City.

He’s remembered with deep affection by the skiers he traveled with and looked after. “Tony was such a selfless, positive addition to our team,” says Christin Cooper, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist in GS. “He gave us his time and energy without bias and with limitless positive energy. We thought we were committed. ‘Anton’ showed us what that really meant.” Hedgecock is survived by his wife Suzanne and son Wesley. —S.M.
