History of Sun Peaks (Tod Mountain)

The first lifts rolled at Tod Mountain in 1961.  Now called Sun Peaks, the resort offers some of British Columbia’s most challenging inbounds skiing. The 3,678-acre ski area is 30 miles to the northeast of Kamloops, B.C.

I will always love Tod Mountain. I started working there just before it opened 1961. Harry Burfield had a ski shop downstairs in the original lodge. I knew Harry from his time on Hollyburn Mountain near Vancouver. The head Instructor was Howard Lamson, from Seattle. I started at the resort doing various jobs and then I was recruited as an ski Instructor. The Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance had a ski instructors training course, which I was enrolled in. It had some of the best powder snow in North America. There was also a great mogul hill at the top of the East run. I don't know if that is still what it is called.I hope one day soon to go back and ski there, although I am in mt 80s. I would certainly love to try it.
