Cheap Thrills

In 1966, Swissair advertised a package deal in SKI magazine: Two weeks at a major Alpine resort for $400, including transatlantic airfare, ground transfers and lodging with breakfast. That would translate to $3,800 in inflated 2023 currency—or $271 a night. Could you match that in the post-pandemic era? Oddly, yes. Round-trip to Zurich starts at about $800 (less if you have frequent-flyer miles), and with today’s strong dollar, you might score a high-season pension room for $1,000 a week. A 14-day lift pass runs about $50 per day—less if you merit a senior discount. That’s $3,500 plus lunch, or around $270 a day. What you can’t find today is the small-print low-season deal: $65 per week (about $620 today) for a week of lodging, all meals, lifts and lessons at Davos in early December.
